Tie-breaker Procedures

FRISCO, Texas – The women’s field for the 2014 Southland Conference Basketball Tournament is set entering the final Saturday of the regular season. All eight teams have qualified for the event which will be held March 13-16 at the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas.

Central Arkansas (12-5) and Stephen F. Austin (12-5) will square off Saturday for at least a share of the regular-season title. The Sugar Bears won the first game of the series but the Ladyjacks are riding a five-game winning streak while UCA has lost its last two. With a win, SFA will claim its 16th conference title while UCA is in search of its second title in three years. UCA can claim the tournament’s top seed with a win or a No. 3 or No. 4 with a loss. SFA’s seed possibilities range in the top four, depending on Saturday’s results.

Lamar (12-5) can earn a share of the regular-season title with a win Saturday against Southeastern Louisiana (7-10). The Lady Cardinals won its only regular-season crown in 2010 when it shared the honors with SFA. Lamar is guaranteed no worse than a No. 2 seed in the conference tournament, which means it has earned byes to the semifinal round.

The only spot in the tournament that is locked up is the No. 8 seed. That belongs to defending champion Oral Roberts (8-9), which is in the field for the second time. The Golden Eagles hold every tie-breaker advantage over the teams that are within a game of then. The Golden Eagles visit Northwestern State (10-7) on Saturday. The Lady Demons can either finish as the No. 4, 5, 6 or 7 seed.

The remaining seeds will be decided Saturday. The top two seeds receive a bye into the tournament semifinals, while the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds receive only a first-round bye.

Nicholls (11-6) enters the weekend as the No. 4 seed, but could finish as high as the No. 3 and low as the No. 5 seed. The Colonels travels to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (10-7) on Saturday at noon. The Islanders, which have won their last seven games, will either be the fifth, sixth or seventh seed.

McNeese State (10-7), which travels to Houston Baptist (7-10) on Saturday at 3 p.m., will be either No. 5, 6 or 7 seed, depending on Saturday’s results.

Houston Baptist, Southeastern Louisiana and Sam Houston State have been eliminated from consideration, while Abilene Christian, UIW and New Orleans were not eligible for this year’s tournament.

This is the seventh year for the tournament to be played at the Merrell Center in Katy. It gets underway Thursday with a pair of games at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., CT. The championship is March 16 at noon and it will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
