Southland Conference Announces Football Players of the Week

FRISCO, Texas – Sam Houston State junior quarterback Jared Johnson and McNeese State senior safety Wallace Scott and senior punter Jean Breaux earned Southland Conference Football Player of the Week honors presented by UniversalCoin.com, the league office announced Monday. Johnson took offensive honors while Scott was named defensive player of the week and Breaux was tabbed the top special teams player.
 
Offensive Player of the Week:  Jared Johnson, Sam Houston State
Johnson tied a school record with five touchdown passes in Sam Houston State’s 49-21 win over Abilene Christian. The junior from Grand Prairie, Texas (South Grand Prairie H.S.), was 17 of 24 passing for 250 yards with touchdown passes of 64, 24, 13, 10 and nine yards. It was his second five-touchdown game of his career. His 64-yard touchdown pass came on a flea-flicker on the opening drive of the game to help set the tone for Sam Houston in the contest. Johnson, who helped the Bearkats reel off their fourth straight win, also had six carries for 46 yards against the Wildcats.

Defensive Player of the Week:  Wallace Scott, McNeese State
For the second consecutive week and the third time this season, Scott’s play for the McNeese State Cowboys has earned him defensive honors for the Southland. In the battle of conference unbeatens between the Cowboys and Central Arkansas, the senior from Weyanoke, La. (West Feliciana H.S.), gave the Cowboys the lead in the fourth quarter with a 45-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown. The score helped ignite a streak of 21 unanswered points, all in the fourth quarter, for McNeese State on the way to a 28-13 win. Scott also had four solo tackles on the evening.

Special Teams Player of the Week: Jean Breaux, McNeese State
Breaux, a senior from Scott, La. (Acadiana H.S.), helped McNeese State flip the field against Central Arkansas with his special teams play to help the Cowboys pull out the 28-13 victory. Breaux recorded 10 punts for a total of 450 yards, including pinning three punts inside the 20-yard line. Breaux’s longest punt of the evening was a 70-yarder that stopped at the one-yard line.
 
Honorable Mention: Jace Denker, Central Arkansas; Francisco Condado, Nicholls; Harrison Heim, Southeastern Louisiana.
 
Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his own player. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
