Spencer, Roberts and Newton Named Soccer Players of the Week

FRISCO, Texas – Houston Baptist freshman forward Sabriah Spencer and Abilene Christian Arkansas junior defender Kelsie Roberts and junior goalkeeper Sydney Newton were named the Southland Conference Women’s Soccer Players of the Week presented by UniversalCoin.com, the league announced Tuesday. Spencer earned offensive honors while Roberts received defensive accolades and Newton was tabbed top goalkeeper of the week.
Offensive Player of the Week – Sabriah Spencer, Houston Baptist
Spencer, a freshman from Brampton, Ontario, Canada scored three goals for the Huskies including both game winners in conference action. She headed the ball off a corner kick four minutes into overtime to knock off the then-SLC’s top team in Southeastern Louisiana, then registered her second 2-goal game of the season, scoring the game’s first two goals.
Honorable Mention: Maria Gomez, Abilene Christian; Rachel Owens, Stephen F. Austin; Spencer Valdespino, Nicholls; Madison Cannon, Sam Houston State.
Defensive Player of the Week – Kelsie Roberts, Abilene Christian
Roberts, a junior from Lucas, Texas, was part of a backline that shutout Northwestern State and Central Arkansas for a pair of league shutouts. She helped limit Central Arkansas to one shot during the second half of Sunday’s match as the Wildcats pitched their first back-to-back shutouts against league opponents.

Goalkeeper of the Week – Sydney Newton, Abilene Christian
Newton, a junior from Mansfield, Texas, pitched her first and second shutouts of the season this weekend on only nine saves to even record at 3-3-3-1. Newton competed for a full 180 minutes seeing 20 shots without allowing a shot to find the back of the net.

Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player. To receive honorable mention, a student-athlete must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
