SUGAR LAND, Texas
– No. 8 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi upset No. 1 Southeastern Louisiana 6-5 in 10 innings to advance in the 2015 conference tournament at Constellation Field.
Southeastern Louisiana picked up one run off of two hits in the top of the first inning. The lone run of the inning came from sophomore Carson Crites on a Texas A&M-Corpus Christi throwing error.
Lion sophomore Ryan Byers homered over the left-field wall scoring two more runs for Southeastern Louisiana to lead 3-0 at the end of the second inning.
Southeastern senior Brett Hoffman laid down a sacrifice bunt down the first baseline, allowing Crites to score again as the Lions the Islanders 4-0 to end the third inning.
A&M-Corpus Christi found a rhythm offensively in the fourth inning scoring three runs off of five hits and one Lion error. Sophomore Zacarias Hardy doubled down the left-field line to score senior Jordan Lee for the Islanders’ first run off the ball game. Hardy and senior Tyler Ware also crossed home plate to cut the Lions’ lead to 4-3 before junior Justin Perales was caught stealing home to end the inning.
Byers walked in the bottom of the eighth inning with the bases loaded to pick up an RBI as senior Kevin Carr scored to give the Islanders a 5-4 lead.
A&M-Corpus Christi Ware picked up a sacrifice fly to score Jordan Lee in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game again, 5-5.
The Islanders put runners on the corners with one out and Southeastern left-handed junior came in to right-handed freshman Kade Granier. Ware singled through the right side to score Hardy for a 6-5 win in the bottom of the tenth inning.
No. 8 A&M-Corpus Christi will take on No. 5 Sam Houston State tonight at 7 p.m. while No. 1 Southeastern Louisiana ended its tournament run.
