Lamar’s Aouani, Chavez Named Cross Country Athletes of the Week

FRISCO, Texas – Lamar student-athletes Iliass Aouani and Evelyn Chavez were named Cross Country Athletes of the Week presented by UniversalCoin.com, the league announced Tuesday.
Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week – Iliass Aouani, Lamar
In his first collegiate race, Aouani ran a time of 18:40.73 to finish second overall at the Rice Invitational in Houston, Texas. Aouani led the Cardinals to a first-place team finish over 12 other teams including Southland’s Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Houston Baptist, UIW, McNeese State, and Nicholls. Aouani ran the 5,500 meter course against 115 other runners.

Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week – Evelyn Chavez, Lamar
Chavez guided the Lady Cardinals to a third-place finish at the Rice Invitational in Houston, Texas. The Porter, Texas (Porter HS), native was the top Southland runner, finishing the 3,800 meter course with a time of 16:26.87. Chavez came in third overall out of 93 total runners.

Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors
