Wilson, Cutura and Ross Named Soccer Players of the Week

FRISCO, Texas – Central Arkansas junior midfielder Shelby Wilson, Southeastern Louisiana Christina Cutura freshman defender and senior goalkeeper Magen Ross were named the Southland Conference Women’s Soccer Players of the Week presented by UniversalCoin.com, the league announced Tuesday. Wilson earned offensive honors while Cutura received defensive accolades and Ross was tabbed top goalkeeper of the week.
 
Offensive Player of the Week – Shelby Wilson, Central Arkansas
Wilson had a big week for the Bears, leading the team in goals, points, and shots on goal. She picked up the assist on the squad’s lone goal on Friday night, lofting a cross into the box. On Sunday, she propelled the Central Arkansas offense, picking up her first career hat trick. She scored the Bears’ second goal by fielding a deflection and hammering it home in the 47th minute. Just two minutes later, the Flower Mound, Texas native got her second goal of the game, collecting a through ball and firing a laser from 22 yards out to the top-left corner of the net. In the 60th minute, the junior completed the hat trick, dribbling into the box and beating the Mississippi Valley State keeper to the near post.

Defensive Player of the Week – Christina Cutura, Southeastern Louisiana
Cutura was part of a back line that helped Southeastern Louisiana hold Texas Southern to six shots on the way to the team’s fourth shutout of the season as the Lady Lion claimed a 6-0 victory on Sunday. Cutura also headed in a corner kick for her second goal of the season. 
 
Honorable Mention: Kristi O’Brien, Houston Baptist; Lexi Riggs, Sam Houston State.

Goalkeeper of the Week – Magen Ross, Sam Houston State 
Senior Magen Ross drew the Sunday start, shutting out Prairie View A&M and collecting her second win of the season as the Bearkats improved to 3-3-1.
 
Honorable Mention: Sydney Newton, Abilene Christian; Hope Sabadash, Southeastern Louisiana; Katie Turner, Houston Baptist.
 
Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player. To receive honorable mention, a student-athlete must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
