Southland Conference Announces Football Players of the Week

FRISCO, Texas – Lamar junior running back Kade Harrington, SMcNeese State senior free safety Wallace Scott and UIW sophomore punter/placekicker Ramon Coto, Jr., earned Southland Conference Football Player of the Week honors presented by UniversalCoin.com, the league office announced Monday. Harrington took offensive honors while Scott was named defensive player of the week and Coto was tabbed the top special teams player.
 
Offensive Player of the Week:  Kade Harrington, Lamar
Harrington led the Lamar offense that racked up 551 total yards in a 49-46 upset win against No. 3 Sam Houston State. The junior from Kingwood, Texas (Kingwood H.S.), had a career-high 230 rushing yards, which marks the second-best single-game total in Lamar history. Harrington also added 83 yards receiving on two catches and a touchdown. The Lamar running back had three touchdowns and 313 total yards in the win.
 
Honorable Mention: Daniel Sams, McNeese State; B.J. Kelly, Houston Baptist.
 
Defensive Player of the Week:  Wallace Scott, McNeese State
Scott played a key role in the Cowboys’ defense that held Stephen F. Austin scoreless for the final three quarters in McNeese’s 28-14 win. The senior from Weyanoke, La. (West Feliciana H.S.), had a 97-yard fumble recovery returned for a touchdown in the first quarter help give the Cowboys momentum. It was the second-longest fumble recovery for a score in school history. Scott had seven total tackles, including five solo, against the Lumberjacks.
 
Honorable Mention:  Adrian Norwood, Jr.; Sam Demark, Abilene Christian.
 
Special Teams Player of the Week: Ramon Coto, Jr.
Coto, a sophomore from Houston, Texas (Westfield H.S.), helped UIW in its 20-10 win over Nicholls with his special teams play. Coto tied the game in the third quarter when he tied a career-long with a 49-yard field. Coto’s punting gave the Colonels’ a long field all game, as he averaged 40.2 yards per punt while pinning Nicholls inside the 20-yard line on three occasions. He also averaged 62.6 yards on kickoffs with two touchbacks on five kicks.
 
Honorable Mention: Alex Ball, Lamar; Zach Lehr, Abilene Christian; Christian Guzman, Houston Baptist.
 
Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his own player. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
