Bassett, Carrion and Latham Named Soccer Players of the Week

FRISCO, Texas – Central Arkansas sophomore forward Camille Bassett, Northwestern State senior defender Patry Carrion and Northwestern State junior goalkeeper Alex Latham were named the Southland Conference Women’s Soccer Players of the Week presented by UniversalCoin.com, the league announced Tuesday. Bassett earned offensive honors while Carrion received defensive accolades and Latham was tabbed the top goalkeeper for the week.
Offensive Player of the Week – Camille Bassett, Central Arkansas
Bassett contributed to four of Central Arkansas’ five goals against UIW Friday night. The sophomore scored her first goal of the night just 29 seconds into the match, before adding her second in the 25th minute. After assisting on UCA’s third goal of the match, Bassett secured her first career hat-trick in the 56th minute. Against ACU on Sunday, Bassett did everything short of scoring, putting one attempt off the post and another off the crossbar while ACU keeper Sydney Newton made a truly spectacular save on Bassett’s attempt in overtime.

Defensive Player of the Week – Patry Carrion, Northwestern State
Carrion was involved in both game-winning goals this weekend. Her free kick found Esdeina Gonzalez for a game-winning header with three minutes left in overtime. Carrion connected on a penalty kick against UIW in the 81st minute for the game’s only goal. She anchored a defense that allowed one combined goal, including several breakaway attempts she corralled herself.

Goalkeeper of the Week – Alex Latham, Northwestern State
Latham posted her fifth shutout (second in conference play) Sunday against Incarnate Word, making six saves, including saving a penalty kick early. Against Abilene, one of her six saves included a breakaway in overtime that kept the game alive. She came off her line multiple times throughout the weekend to thwart attacks.

Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player. To receive honorable mention, a student-athlete must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
