BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Sam Houston State men and women swept the 2016 Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships Tuesday at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

For the Bearkats, it is their first Southland indoor men’s championship in school history and fourth for the women, with the last title won in 2014. Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin are the only current Southland programs with team championships.
 
The women’s team held a commanding 16 point lead over Abilene Christian on the opening day of the championship while the men’s team was tied with Stephen F. Austin at 38. The Bearkats picked up where it left off Tuesday as sprinters led the way down the final stretch of the meet.
 
The final day of competition started with Tyler Adams of Sam Houston State taking the men’s heptathlon with a score of 5,277 points. On Monday, Adams took first in the high jump, leaping 6-11.75 (2.17 meters) for a Southland and facility heptathlon record, and second in the long jump. On Tuesday he placed first in the men’s 1,000 meters. The Wildcats recorded a total of 13 team points in the event as Luke Woods placed second clocked and Wyatt French fourth.
 
In the men’s weight throw, Southeastern dominated as Alexander Young threw for a mark of 71-11.5 (21.93 meters), to break his own meet record from last year. His teammate Jonathon Kinchen was second at 66-02.25 (20.17 meters), while Jimmy LeBlanc was fourth and Austin Funk was seventh. The Lions earned a total of 25 team points in the event.
 
Stephen F. Austin picked up 14 team points in the men’s 60-meter hurdles with Kerry Gleason claiming second and teammate Jordan Washington placing third. New Orleans’ Michael Nicholls placed first for the Privateers with a time of 7.97 seconds.
 
Northwestern State’s Amir James captured the men’s 60-meter dash in a time of 6.76 seconds. Bearkats’ Justin Jenkins and Chris Jefferson placed third and fourth to give Sam Houston State an additional 11 team points.
 
Sam Houston State scored 10 team points in the men’s mile as Jeffrey Moore won the race at 4:12.91. Tobias Riker (4:13.48) finished second for the Lamar while his teammate Stewart Ferguson was fourth to give the Cardinals 13 points. McNeese State’s Oliver James (4:13.59) placed second for the Cowboys.
 
Jeffrey Moore won the men’s 800-meter race for the Bearkats with a time of 1:52. Sam Houston State recorded 15 team points in the race with a fourth-place finish by Robert Monticone at 1:52.24.
 
The Demons had a strong showing in the men’s triple jump as Aaron Williams won the event with a jump of 50-06.75 (15.41 meters) while his twin Emmanuel Williams came in second at 50-02.75 (15.31 meters). Northwestern State had four athletes score a total of 25 team points in the event. The Demons have won this event for the fifth consecutive year.
 
Amir James claimed the men’s 200-meter dash for the Demons in a time of 21.18 seconds, while the Lions picked up 10 team points in the 400 meters with Dontrell Lyons taking first.
 
Lamar won the men’s 3,000-meter run with Iliass Aouani and Alex Dunbar claiming the top two spots to give the Cardinals 21 team points in the event. Islanders’ runner Philipp Barr claimed third for six team points.
 
Two teams had an impressive showing to end the championship as the 4x400-meter relay. Southeastern placed first with a time of 3:08.97 while Stephen F. Austin placed second with a time of 3:09. Both teams broke the Southland meet record. Sam Houston State came in third while UIW came in fourth.
 
Iliass Aouani was the men’s high point scorer with 22.5 total points after his first-place finish in the 3,000 meter run along with several other top finishes.
 
The Sam Houston State women scored 162 points and beat Abilene Christian by 49.5 points. Stephen F. Austin was third with 106 points, while Lamar finished fourth with 63 points.
 
In the first completed women’s events of the day, Danielle Demas of Sam Houston State took first in the both the 60-meter hurdles 60-meter dash with times of 8.31 and 7.52 seconds to give the Bearkats 20 more combined points.
 
Lamar’s Verity Ockenden broke the women’s one mile run meet record with a time of 4:45.93. Alexandria Hackett and Diana Garcia-Munoz of Abilene Christian took second (4:50.76) and third (4:56.99), respectively, while their teammate Aubrey Till took sixth to total 17 points for the Wildcats.
 
Northwestern State scored 16 points in the women’s triple jump as Por’sha Thomas (42-04) and Breann Denson (40-0) took first and third place.
 
The Ladyjacks won the 200-meter dash as Aliyah Davis took first with a time of 23.92 seconds while her teammate Chasity Clark took fourth. Sam Houston State claimed second and third with Danielle Demas’ (24.06) and Paula Smith’s (24.28) times, respectively.
 
Abilene Christian’s Kimone Green captured the women’s 400-meter dash, posting a time of 54.64 seconds. The Wildcats got 16 points in the race as Jessica James took third place with a time of 55.24 seconds. The 800 meters spotlighted Sam Houston State’s Camry Grigsby (2:09.68) and Briana McCall (2:09.94) who both broke the meet record.
 
Kenzie Walker won the women’s pole vault for the Wildcats, clearing 13-1.5 (4 meters). Southeastern’s Sharron-Ann Ourso (12-09.5) and Sam Houston State’s Ashley Thompson (12-09.5) also made it to the podium.
 
Caitlin Jones of Stephen F. Austin won the high jump, leaping for 5-07 (1.7 meters). Second place went to A&M-Corpus Christi’s Sashane Hanson while third went to Jasmine Waring of UIW.
 
Kristine Hanks of Sam Houston State threw for 48-10 (14.88 meters) to win the women’s shot put. Stephen F. Austin’s Jessica Spelling placed second and Southeastern’s Jermisha Frazier third.
 
Lamar took the top two spots and three of the top four in the women’s mile led by Minttu Hukka (4:51.69) in first place and Verity Ockenden (4:52.20) second. Rana Ryan of SFA was third at 4:53.82 as the Cardinals’ Louise Webb finished fourth.
 
Verity Ockenden of Lamar took charge in the 3,000-meter run as she clocked in at 9:31.26 and won the race. The Wildcats earned a total of 18 points with Alexandria Hackett taking second at 9:37.04 and Aubrey Till, third, with a time of 9:49.07.
 
Sam Houston State won the women’s 4x400-meter relay with meet record time of 3:41.13, while Abilene Christian (3:44.69) finished second and Stephen F. Austin took home third (3:45.40).
 
Danielle Demas of Sam Houston State was the women’s high point scorer, recording a total of 28 points throughout the championship. Demas took first in both 60-meter events and took second in the 200-meter dash.
 
For student-athletes who have qualifying marks, the 2016 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships will be held Friday and Saturday, March 11-12 at the same CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama, hosted by the Samford University.
