No. 1 Arkansas State Claims Southland Bowling League Championship Victory

Kenner, La. – Top-seeded Arkansas State won the 2016 Southland Bowling League title by defeating No. 3 Sam Houston State in a 4-0 sweep in the championship match.
Vanderbilt defeated Arkansas State 196-185 in the first game of the back draw match, but the Red Wolves were relentless as they came back with a 4-1 defeat to advance to the championship match, taking on Sam Houston State.
The Bearkats entered the championship undefeated, but fell in a winner-take-all round.
Arkansas State topped Sam Houston State in the opening game with a 177-176 win. The Red Wolves continued with momentum winning the reaming games 159-142, 200-152 and 200-155. This is the first Southland Bowling League championship victory for the Red Wolves after falling to Vanderbilt last season in the inaugural SBL Championship.
Arkansas State sophomore Jordan Richard claimed Most Valuable Bowler, leading her team to victory. The all-tournament team consisted of Sam Houston State’s Stephanie Zavala, Arkansas State’s Brooke Woods, Arkansas State’s Jadee Scott-Jones, Sam Houston State’s Carrie Hopkinson and Monmouth’s Kaitlyn Reth.
The Red Wolves and the Southland Bowling League teams will now wait for the NCAA championship eight-team selection.
The Southland Bowling League was formed in the fall of 2014 and by the formalization as a league. Southland Bowling League members will be at-large candidates for the NCAA Championship. The NC Bowling Championship is April 14-16 in North Brunswick, N.J.
