Lumberacks, Bearkats Win the 2016 Outdoor Track & Field Championships

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Stephen F. Austin men and Sam Houston State women captured team titles at the 2016 Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships Sunday afternoon at the Dr. Jack Dugan Soccer & Track Stadium. It is the fourth title for the SFA men and the fifth for the Sam Houston women.

The Lumberjacks finished with 172 points to win their fourth men’s outdoor championship in the past six years. The Bearkats claimed their second team title in the last three years with 147 total points.
 
Sam Houston finished second in the men’s championship at 149 team points, while Northwestern State took home third place after scoring a total of 116 points. Abilene Christian was fourth with 79 points and Southeastern Louisiana rounded out the top five at 60 points.
 
Unable to claim an event title on the final day of competition, the Lumberjacks stockpiled 10 top-3 finishes including seven runner-up performances by pole vaulter Cameron Meyer, distance runner Charles Mathenge, sprinters Kerry Gleason, Aaron Piper, and Jonathon Joe, and the 4x400 relay team.
 
The Bearkats earned two first-place finishes Sunday with wins in the 1,500-meter run and 800m. The meet’s high point scorer Jeffrey Moore earned both titles with a time of 3:54.58 in the 1,500m and 1:52.36 in the 800m. Tyler Adam, who won the decathlon earlier this weekend, took second for the Bearkats in the high jump by clearing 6-10.75
 
Demon sprinters Micah Larkins and Amir James earned event titles in the 100 and 200-meter dashes, respectively. In the 100-meter dash Larkins clocked in an impressive 10.15 while teammate James was close behind at 10.19 for third. James earned his title with a time 20.74 seconds. George Flaviano gave the Demons their third event title on the day with a 51.21 time in the 400-meter hurdles.
 
Finishing second in the women’s championship was NSU who tallied 112.33 total team points, followed by SFA, third, with 104.5 points. In fourth place was Abilene Christian, claiming 101 points as UIW rounded out the top five with 82.33.
 
The Bearkats claimed two first-place finishes on Sunday with top finishes in the 100-meters hurdles and the 4x400-meter relays. Danielle Demas took the 100-meter hurdles crown in 13.08 seconds. The 4x400-meter relay team of Briana McCall, Kodii Church, Ruth Amaku, and Camry Grigsby took first place the race with a time of 3:40.
 
The Lady Demons claimed three individual titles on the final day of competition with wins in the 400 meters as well as the 100 and 200-meters dashes. De’Shalyn Jones finished the 400m in a time of 54.34 for the first-place crown. The women’s top point scorer Jermeka McBride claimed both the 100-meter dash (11.44) and 200-meter dash (23.63) to earn 22 points on the weekend.
 
The Ladyjacks claimed an event champion when Jessica Spelling took first place in the discus throw. Her toss of 155-09 gave SFA the first women’s event title of the day. The 4x400 relay team of Gill, Williams, Jackson, and Evan took third to end the day for the women.
 
For student-athletes who have qualifying marks, the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships West preliminary round will be hosted by Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas, May 26-38. The NCAA East preliminary round will be held in Jacksonville, Fla., hosted by North Florida May 26-28. Student-athletes who have earned qualifying marks will then compete in the NCAA Outdoor Championships held in Eugene, Ore., June 8-11, hosted by Oregon.
