Peacock, Roberts and Newton Named Soccer Players of the Week

FRISCO, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana senior forward/midfielder Casey Peacock, Abilene Christian defender Kelsie Roberts and ACU senior goalkeeper Sydney Newton were named the Southland Conference Women’s Soccer Players of the Week presented by UniversalCoin.com, the league announced Tuesday. Peacock earned offensive honors while Roberts received defensive accolades and Newton was tabbed the top goalkeeper for the week.
 
Offensive Player of the Week – Casey Peacock, Southeastern Louisiana
Peacock tallied five points with two goals and an assist in Southeastern Louisiana’s 3-1 win over McNeese to start conference play. The senior forward/midfielder from Douglasville, Ga. (Robert S. Alexander H.S.), scored the game-winner at the 65:43 mark with a shot from outside the box before putting the game away with a header for a score with less than seven minutes remaining.

Defensive Player of the Week – Kelsie Roberts, Abilene Christian
Roberts scored her first goal of the season in Abilene Christian’s 4-0 win at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The senior defender from Lucas, Texas (Lovejoy H.S.), netted her goal in the 32nd minute off a corner kick from Chloe Fifer. Roberts was also part of the Wildcat defense that limited the Islanders to just 11 shots and two corner kicks to help record the team’s third shutout of the season.
 
Honorable Mention: Kristi O’Brien, Houston Baptist; Mari Gillespie, Stephen F. Austin; Amber Lasher, Southeastern Louisiana.

Goalkeeper of the Week – Sydney Newton, Abilene Christian 
Newton made four saves while facing 11 shots in Abilene Christian’s 4-0 conference-opening shutout against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The senior from Coppell, Texas (New Tech H.S.), now has two shutouts on the season and six for her career, moving into fourth on the ACU all-time shutout list.
 
Honorable Mention: Lillie Ehlert, Stephen F. Austin; Hope Sabadash, Southeastern Louisiana; Katie Turner, Houston Baptist.
 
Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player. To receive honorable mention, a student-athlete must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
