FRISCO, Texas – UIW junior Deion Hardy and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi junior Allyson Girard are the Southland Conference Cross Country Athletes of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. Southland Athletes of the Week are presented by

Both athletes led their teams at the UIW Invitational in San Antonio last Friday. This award marks Hardy’s second Athlete of the Week honor this season.
UIW and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi have both concluded their regular seasons and next head to Abilene, Texas, for the
2017 Southland Conference Cross Country Championships on Friday, Oct. 27.
Men’s Athlete of the Week: Deion Hardy, UIW - Jr. - Temple, Texas
Hardy became the first runner in program history to win two races in one season, beating 73 competitors with an 8K time of 25:42.6 at the UIW Invitational. Hardy has won twice in the last three races and has led the men during that stretch. He helped the men to a first-place team finish, beating second-place TCU by seven seconds.

Women’s Athlete of the Week: Allyson Girard, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi - Jr. - Gilbert, Ariz.?
Girard finished first among all runners Friday, posting a personal best in the 6K (22:17.4) at the UIW Invitational. She crossed the finish line a full 18 seconds ahead of all Division I competition while recording her third consecutive top-Islander performance since coming to Corpus Christi from Mesa Community College (Ariz.).

Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athletes is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots.
