Vaughn, Woods Earn Week Six Volleyball Awards

The Bearkats (7-9, 4-0 SLC) and the Islanders (8-8, 5-0 SLC) each went 3-0 in Southland matches this week to remain undefeated in league play. Sam Houston travels to Nicholls (2-16, 0-5 SLC) on Thursday before facing McNeese (6-10, 3-2 SLC) in Lake Charles, La., on Saturday. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi stays home this week, hosting Central Arkansas (14-2, 3-1 SLC) on Thursday and Northwestern State (6-12, 1-2 SLC) on Saturday.
Offensive Player of the Week: Jordyn Vaughn, Sam Houston State – Sr. – Outside Hitter – Huntsville, Texas
Senior Jordyn Vaughn was instrumental in helping Sam Houston State pick up three wins this week to improve to 4-0 on the Southland season, the Bearkats’ best league start since beginning 2013 6-0. The Bearkats’ hometown hitter averaged five kills per set and hit .305 for the week in wins over Nicholls, New Orleans and Southeastern Louisiana. She started the week with 12 kills and two blocks against the Colonels on Tuesday before firing off 19 kills against the Privateers on Thursday. Vaughn finished out the week with another 19-kill performance as Sam Houston swept the Lions on Saturday. On the conference season, Vaughn is second in the league for kills per set with a 4.57 average.

Defensive Player of the Week: Madison Woods, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi – Jr. – Defensive Specialist/Libero – San Antonio, Texas
Junior libero Madison Woods had 20 digs or more in each of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s three conference matches this week. Woods racked up 70 digs and averaged 6.36 digs per set in wins over UIW, Nicholls and McNeese. Playing at UIW in front of her hometown crowd Tuesday, Woods combined for 23 digs in the sweep over the Cardinals to tie her career high for digs in a match. Four days later, she broke that mark. The league leader for digs per set in conference matches, averaging 5.68, dug 26 attacks against the Cowgirls in four sets. She also added six aces on the service line. The Islanders limited their opponents to a .190 hitting percentage on the week.
