Santana, Casper Earn Indoor Track & Field Weekly Awards

2017 Southland Indoor Track & Field Week Four Recap
 
FRISCO, Texas – Senior Kierstin Santana of Houston Baptist and McNeese senior Nicole Casper earned weekly honors for Southland Indoor Track and Field, the league announced Wednesday. Southland Conference Athletes of the Week are presented by UniversalCoin.com.
 
Women’s Track Athlete of the Week – Kierstin Santana, Houston Baptist
Santana placed first at the Houston Invitational in the 800-meter, besting 42 other runners with a time of 2:16.00. The Baytown, Texas product’s mark is the fastest time in the Southland Conference this season.
 
Honorable Mention: Michaela Hackett, Abilene Christian; Jermeka McBride, Northwestern State, Dominique Taylor, Lamar; Sharrona Williams, Southeastern La.; Samantha Gibson, Central Arkansas
 
Women’s Field Athlete of the Week – Nicole Casper, McNeese
The senior out of Buna, Texas broke her own indoor record while setting a new facility record in the pole vault with a first-place height of 13-5.25. She continues to rank No. 1 in the Southland Conference and is tied for 19th nationally.

Houston Baptist heads north to Frisco next week to take part in the Dunamis Indoor Classic at The Ford Center at The Star Thursday, Feb. 9 to Saturday, Feb. 11. McNeese will head to Baton Rouge this weekend to compete at the LSU Bayou Bengal on Friday, Feb. 3
 
Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the athletes of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own student-athlete. To receive honorable mention, an athlete must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
