BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Sam Houston State displayed their depth at the Birmingham CrossPlex, sweeping their second-straight indoor championship meet. The men's team tallied 142.50 total team points while McNeese finished with 120 to earn the team runner-up award. On the women's side, the Bearkats finished with 127 points, 30 clear of runner-up Lamar (97).

Quite fitting to open the final day of action, Sam Houston State's Tyler Adams continued his dominance in the men's heptathlon with a commanding win in the 60-meter hurdles (8.41). Entering the last two events, Adams held a 4,031 to 3,674 lead over second-place Hunter Key of Stephen F. Austin.

Not to be outdone was fellow Bearkat Jay Roberson, who broke his own 2015 heptathlon pole vault record, clearing a height of 5.25m (17-02.75) to win that event for Sam Houston State.

Adams shined in the 1,000m run to close out the men's heptathlon, surging past a pack of Lumberjacks in the final lap to take the event win (21:41.58) and seal his overall heptathlon victory with 5,436 points. A pair of Stephen F. Austin athletes took second and third with junior Hunter Key finishing with 5,137 points and sophomore Connor Wilbur with 4,917.

Tyler Adams has now won the heptathlon at the Southland Indoor Championships for three straight years.

In the men's weight throw, senior Kalvin Singletary took gold with a distance of 19.28m (63-03.25), improving on his fifth-place finish at last year's championships. Another Stephen F. Austin pair ended up on the podium with sophomore Ben Bibby taking second place (18.51m / 60-08.75) and senior Lucas Akins finishing in third (18.14 / 59-06.25).

Northwestern State captured a 1-2 podium finish in the women's 60m hurdles to kick off the running event finals for the day. Juniors Daeshon Gordon (8.20) and Braneshia Payton (8.44) took the top two spots with UIW sophomore Jerica Love finishing third with a time of 8.50. Gordon's 8.20 was only one-hundredth of a second off the conference championship record of 8.19 set by Sabrina Starr of Sam Houston State in 2014.

The men's 60m hurdles followed with Michael Nicholls of New Orleans repeating as the champion. The sophomore ran a 7.93, an improvement of his freshman year winning time of 7.97 in 2016. In second place was junior Kerry Gleason of Stephen F. Austin (7.98) and freshman Fabian McCall of Sam Houston State in third (8.13).

The women's 60m dash came next, where Lamar's Thai Williams earned her second gold medal of the competition. The sophomore earned gold in the long jump yesterday and followed it up with a tight 7.47 to 7.48 win over sophomore teammate Chanissey Fowler to secure a 1-2 podium finish for the Cardinals. Southeastern Louisiana's Sharrona Williams took third with a time of 7.50.

Sam Houston State got on the gold medal stand again with another tight finish in the men's 60m hurdles. Sophomore Chris Jefferson (6.70) beat out 2016 champion Amir James of Northwestern State (6.71) to earn another 10 team points for the Bearkats. Clinton Cole, a sophomore out of UIW finished third in 6.73.

The women's mile came next, with Wednesday's 10 qualifiers taking to the track for the final. UIW junior Keila Rodriguez got off to an aggressive start ahead of a pair of Stephen F. Austin runners, but with three laps to go, SFA's Taylor Anderson confidently overtook her through the first turn before a trio of Ladyjacks found their way to the front of the pack. With one lap to go, Lamar's Evelyn Chavez made a push to the front of the pack and put on a massive surge on the back stretch to take gold with a time of 4:56:83. SFA's Rana Ryan (4:57.94) and Taylor Anderson (4:58.07) took second and third, respectively.

The men's mile followed, with Lamar's Frederico Gasbarri narrowly leading a tightly contested pack at the start. No one appeared to lose more than a step as they approached the second half of the race, but Quinlin McGregor of Stephen F. Austin began to make a push, followed by UIW's Deion Hardy. With three laps to go, it was McNeese's Christoph Graf who made a furious push, carving out as comfortable a lead as there could be in the race over Hardy. With one lap to go, Hardy tracked Graf around the final turn, but barely missed overtaking him at the line. Graf took a narrow gold with a time of 4:11.86, followed by Hardy with 4:11.87 and UIW teammate Jorge Quintero with 4:14.48.

In the women's 400m, it was regular season leader De'Shalyn Jones of Northwestern State who came out on top with a final time of 54:43. The junior Lady Demon led the conference in 2017 with a personal best of 54.29 set earlier this February. Sophomore Dekayta Alex of Southeastern Louisiana took silver with a time of 54.84. She ranked second in the Southland this season with a personal best of 55.55. Kodii Church, a junior from Sam Houston State, finished third (55.35).

The 400m league leader Andre Colebrook managed to recover from a stumble on the first turn of the final lap to finish with a time of 48.22 to take gold for the Lions. Stephen F. Austin's Tedrick Hawkins (48.40) and Will Gibson (48:41) took silver and bronze for the Lumberjacks.

The Bearkats continued to rack up the gold medals, with sophomore Tristyn Allen winning gold in the women's triple jump (12.44m / 40-09.75). She finished ahead of Thai Williams of Lamar, who earned her third medal of the competition and finished with a distance of 12.29m (40-04.00). Northwestern State junior Fabriana Nation took third place (12.18 / 39-11.50).

It was another Sam Houston show in the women's 800m with Briana McCall (2:10.46) and 2016 champion Camry Grigsby (2:12.06) taking first and second place, respectively. A deep last-lap charge led them past the pack, with Houston Baptist senior Kierstin Santana taking third with a time of 2:12.15.

In the men's 800m, UIW's Deion Hardy - racing in his second event of the day - got out to an early lead but was unable to hold off a pair of furious charges on the final stretch from Houston Baptist junior Daniel Shelton and Sam Houston State junior Jeffrey Moore. Moore finished first to repeat as the men's 800m champion with a time of 1:51.46. Shelton took second (1:51.92) while Hardy managed to hang on for third place (1:52.06).

Stephen F. Austin earned a gold in the women's 200m with Imani Nave finishing first with a time of 24:04. Junior De'Shalyn Jones of Northwestern State returned to the podium with a silver medal (24.083), followed closely by teammate Jermeka Bridge, a senior with a finishing time of 24.089.

The conference championship record fell in the men's 200m race, with Northwestern State's Amir James breaking the previous meet-best mark of 21.17 set by fellow Demon Justin Walker in 2014. The junior James took gold with a time of 21.15, followed by UIW sophomore Clinton Cole (21.40) and SFA junior Tedrick Hawkins (21.45).

The women's 3000m came next with two large heats needed to decide the podium. When the two finishes were tallied, it was Abilene Christian's Michaela Hackett earning another gold medal with a blistering finishing time of 9:30.75

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi earned their first gold of the competition with sophomore Sashane Hanson's 1.73m high jump. Sophomore Morgan Heinrich of Sam Houston State took second with 1.68m with fellow Bearkat Baylee Lara earning third place with the same distance and lost tie breaker on total attempts.

McNeese senior Nicole Casper put on an impressive showing in the women's pole vault, winning gold with a cleared height of 4.07m (13-04.25). Sam Houston State senior Hannah Callaway took silver with 4.02m (13-02.25) and sophomore Dakota Mayr from Stephen F. Austin finished third with a height of 3.92m (12-10.25).

Another McNeese senior earned gold with John Lemke dominating the men's triple jump, earning gold with an impressive 15.60m distance (51-02.25). Lamar sophomore Tylen Guidry finished second with a 15.14m jump (49-08.25) followed by fellow Cardinal junior Brian O'Bonna with a 15.07m mark (49-05.50).

The Bearkats added yet another gold in Kristine Hanks in the women's shot put. The junior repeated as champion after taking first place in 2016 as well. Hanks hit a mark of 15.31m (50-02.75), followed by Southeastern Louisiana freshman Ashley Davis (15.29m / 50-02.00) and Northwestern State sophomore Destiny Myers (14.54m / 47-08.50).

Michaela Hackett added another gold to her tally for the 2017 championships, winning the women's 3000m and breaking the conference meet record in the process. She crossed the line in 9:30.75, breaking the record of second-place finisher Jannika John of Lamar by just over two-tenths of a second. John finished second today with a 9:55.19. Senior Shelby Pesek of Stephen F. Austin took the bronze medal with a time of 9:56.89.

Nathan Jones added another gold to McNeese's tally with a win in the men's 3000m. The junior crossed the line in 8:17.77, followed by Sam Houston State senior Chris Speaks (8:19.13) and fellow Cowboy Oliver James in third (8:19.16). McNeese took four of the top six finishing spots.

In the final women's event of the day, Northwestern State took home the gold in the 4x400m relay with runners Tamara Style, Natashia Jackson, Daeshon Gordon and De'Shalyn Jones. The Lady Demons crossed the line in 3:45.
