2017 Southland Outdoor Track & Field Weekly Recap
 
FRISCO, Texas – Following another impressive pair of performances at the TCU Invitational in Fort Worth, Northwestern State swept the outdoor track & field weekly awards for the second consecutive week. Amir James was named the Men’s Outdoor Athlete of the Week while De’Shalyn Jones earned weekly women’s honors. Southland Conference Athletes of the Week are presented by UniversalCoin.com.
 
Men’s Athlete of the Week – Amir James, Northwestern State
James’ 200-meter time of 20.56 is the top time in the country out of 94 competitors. The mark also ranks first in the east region. His 100-meter time of 10.30 ranks fifth in the country out of 95 athletes and is the second-ranked time in the east region. His effort on the 4x100 team helped the Demons to second overall finish, behind only the host team, TCU.

Women’s Athlete of the Week – De’Shalyn Jones, Northwestern State
Jones smashed the Northwestern State program record in the 200m by almost half a second en route to claiming victory at the TCU Invitational. Her time of 23.12 currently ranks first in the east region and is number two in the country. She is also a part of the 4x100 and 4x400 squads, both of which are ranked number four in the east region and top-15 in the country after their times posted in Fort Worth.

The Demons and Lady Demons will head back to north Texas to compete in the Bobby Lane Invitational this weekend, hosted by UT Arlington on March 24-25.
 
Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the athletes of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own student-athlete. To receive honorable mention, an athlete must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
