Southeastern Louisiana Leads After Day One at 2017 Men’s Golf Championship

MCKINNEY, Texas – On a sunny and windy opening day of the 2017 Southland Men’s Golf Championship, Southeastern Louisiana came away with the lead after round one. The Lions sit at seven-over par as a team with a score of 295. They were led by senior James Anstiss who shot a 70 (two-under par) through his first 18 holes.
 
Southeastern Louisiana had three players in the top 10 with Paul Obermann tied for fourth (73) and Gustavo Leon tied for ninth (75). The Lions led the field in overall pars with 62 on the day. Anstiss parred or birdied all but two of his holes while Leon accomplished the same on all but three.
 
Defending champions McNeese finished round one in second place with a team score of 302 (14-over par). The Cowboys had two players in the top 10, led by Andreas Krokeide (T2, 72, even par) and Ian Berrigan (T9, 75). The Cowboys are tied for first with Sam Houston State with 15 birdies. Krokeide and Berrigan each notched four birdies while Krokeide parred 10 holes.
 
Sam Houston State sits in third place after round one, also with two players in the top 10. William Holcolmb with a 73 (T4) while parring his entire back nine. Noah Steele is tied for fourth with a 75 and registered four birdies. The Bearkats are tied for first with the Cowboys for 15 team birdies.
 
Nicholls ranks fourth after the opening day behind an impressive opening round for Albert Badosa-Soler, who opened his round with a par, birdie then an eagle on hole three. Despite a double bogey on hole six, he finished even par through his round and sits tied for second individually.
 
Val Almendarez of Houston Baptist (sixth after round one) also sits tied for fourth with a 73 (one-over par) while Louis Tomlinson (Central Arkansas) and Angelo Leyvani (Stephen F. Austin) are both tied for seventh with scores of 74.
