Lamar, Central Arkansas advance to Southland Tennis Semifinals

BEAUMONT, Texas - Second seeded Lamar and No. 3 Central Arkansas advanced to the Southland Conference Women's Tournament semifinals with wins in the opening matches this morning at the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center.
The match is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday.
No. 2 Lamar vs. No. 7 Sam Houston State
Tournament host Lamar shutout Sam Houston State 4-0 in the quarterfinal match Friday morning. The Cardinals began the day claiming the doubles point, picking up wins from their No. 2 and No. 3 slots. Jasmin Buchta and Hanna Elfving earned the 6-3 defeat in the No. 2 flight over Sam Houston's Fabienne Gettwart and Khee Yen Wee to clinch the 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
Talisa Merchiers won 6-2, 6-2 over the Bearkats' Diana Friedrichs in No. 5 singles to give Lamar its first victory in singles play. Buchta defeated Carrie Casey 6-3, 7-5 at the No. 3 slot before Anna Spengler ended the match with a 6-4, 6-4 win on Wee.
No. 3 Central Arkansas vs. No. 6 Northwestern State
No. 3 Central Arkansas opened up doubles play with a 6-1 win in the No. 3 spot from Amiru Shimoguchi and Marli Van Heerden, but it took a bit more to clinch the doubles victory. In No. 2 doubles, All-Conference First Team doubles squad QiLi Ma and Rada Manataweewat squeezed the 7-5 win. In the top flight, Central Arkansas' Pornpawee Pramethong and Hee-Jin Oh and Northwestern State's Polina Ivanova and Polina Mutel were tied at 6-6 before the match was halted.
In singles competition, Northwestern State captured victories at No. 2 and No. 3 singles from Ivanova and Mutel to tie things at 2-2, respectively. The Bears' Pornapawee Pramethong defeated Iryna Vardanian in the top flight 7-6, 6-2. Marli Van Heerden put the match away at the No. 5 slot over Vladislave Litvinova 6-0, 7-5.
