McNeese Sweeps Week Two Soccer Awards

2017 Southland Soccer Week Three Notes (PDF)
FRISCO, Texas – A pair of freshmen and a senior defender earned all three weekly awards for McNeese women’s soccer, the conference announced Tuesday. Freshman forward Havana Johnson was named offensive player of the week, senior defender Gabi D’Alesandro was voted defensive player of the week and freshman Emma Roccaforte was tabbed goalkeeper of the week.
The Cowgirls were 1-0 in week two, winning 2-0 on the road at UL-Lafayette. The Aug. 27 matchup scheduled against Texas State in San Marcos was cancelled due to the effects of Hurricane Harvey.

McNeese travels to Colorado Springs to take on Air Force this Friday at 6:30 p.m. CT before heading to Laramie to face Wyoming on Sept. 3 at noon CT.
Offensive Player of the Week: Havana Johnson – Fr. – Forward - Coeur d'Alene, Idaho
Johnson continues to lead the way for the Cowgirls’ offense, scoring all three goals in three games played for McNeese. The Lake City High School product scored two goals off two shots on goal against UL-Lafayette in a 2-0 victory on Aug. 25 to help move the Cowgirls to 2-1-0 on the year.

Defensive Player of the Week: Gabi D’Alesandro – Sr. – Defense – Flower Mound, Texas
D’Alesandro has been an all-around veteran contributor for McNeese, anchoring a defense which allowed zero goals and only 13 shots allowed in week two. She also assisted Johnson on one of her two goals against UL-Lafayette.
Honorable Mention: Megan Dodd, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi; Sage Leffew, Northwestern State; Carli Arthurs, Stephen F. Austin.
Goalkeeper of the Week: Emma Roccaforte – Fr. – Goalkeeper – Nederland, Texas
Roccaforte earned her second shutout in the second start of her career. The freshman finished with four saves on four shots faced en route to a 2-0 victory against the Ragin’ Cajuns.
Honorable Mention: Abbie Flax, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi; Alex Latham, Northwestern State; Madeline Talbot, Stephen F. Austin.
Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athletes is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots.
