FRISCO, Texas – The first look at the 2017 men’s and women’s seasons will take place during Southland Conference Basketball Social Media Day at the Toyota Center in downtown Houston on Monday, Oct. 16, 2017, from 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. CDT.

Media are encouraged to attend the event in person, which will include participation from all 26 Southland head basketball coaches -- 13 women’s and 13 men’s. Activities for the day include:

  • Media availability for each coach, including time for one-on-one interviews.

  • Southland television broadcasters Tatum Everett and Lincoln Rose sitting down for Q&As with each coach in the Houston Rockets’ visitors’ locker room as part of a comprehensive preview of each team for a show that will stream on ESPN3 at 6 p.m. It will be available on-demand immediately follows its initial showing.

  • All 26 coaches participating in interactive social media activities, which fans can follow on the Southland Conference Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts.

  • Social media undertakings will be followed by a unique session with Southland television analyst and basketball Hall-of-Famer Van Chancellor.

Chancellor, who calls Southland action including the conference tournament in Katy, Texas, has a stellar coaching resume that includes: Four WNBA titles with the Houston Comets; a perfect 38-0 record in international competition as head coach of the U.S. Women’s National Team; and 17 NCAA Tournament appearances with the University of Mississippi and LSU – including a Final Four appearance with the Tigers in 2007-08.

  • The day will begin with opening comments from Southland Conference Commissioner Tom Burnett, a member of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee.

Results of the coaches’ and SID’s predicted order of finish for the conference will be unveiled during the event.

In addition to the initial October 16 airing on ESPN3 at 6 p.m. via watchespn.com and the ESPN app, archived video of each coach’s comments and select quotes from each attendee will be available after the conclusion of the event.

Both the men and women begin their seasons on Nov. 10.  Men’s teams begin conference play on Dec. 28, while women’s teams first tip on Dec. 31.
