MONTGOMERY, Texas – Paced by defending Southland individual champion Lexi Brooks’ one-under second round, Houston Baptist maintains the lead of the 2018 Southland Conference Women’s Golf Championship heading into tomorrow’s final round at the Woodforest Golf Club in Montgomery, Texas.
On a day that wind helped the overall scoring average go up by two shots from yesterday’s round, Brooks was the only player to go under par. She recorded five birdies, including the only birdie on the 18th hole. The final hole provided the most trouble for individuals Tuesday, causing a 5.03 scoring average on the 393-yard, par 4.
HBU (597, +29) leads Central Arkansas (609, +41) by 12 strokes. Last year UCA carded a 288 total score in the final round to finish just one stroke back from the championship. The Huskies are seeking their second consecutive Southland title. They will group together with Sam Houston State (616, +48) tomorrow. The Bearkats scored a 311 total team score led by Jenna Phillips’ two-over second round. She sits in third individually.
Alisa Chong of Houston Baptist holds the individual lead after finishing today three-over after shooting an even par in the opening round. She is up by three strokes on Central Arkansas’ Fernanda Lira. The top three teams will tee off at 9:30 a.m. CT.
Lamar (620, +52) shot the second-best team score for Tuesday and sit in fourth. The Cardinals, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (626, +58) and McNeese (634, +66) will tee off at 8:45 a.m. Wednesday. The Cowgirls are tied for sixth with UIW but hold the advantage based off their fifth scorer today.
