Maria Bulanova Named Southland Bowler of the Month

FRISCO, Texas – Following a dominant performance at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invitational, Vanderbilt freshman Maria Bulanova was named the Southland Bowling League Bowler of the Month for December, the league announced Wednesday.
The Moscow, Russia native finished first out of 68 competitors with an average score of 235.7 per game over 147 frames, earning All-Tournament and Tournament MVP honors. Bulanova averaged 22.966 per frame with a 65.3 strike percentage, finishing with an average margin of 10.1 over the second-place finisher.
She paced a strong team performance for the Commodores, with teammates Kristin Quah and Giselle Poss finishing third and sixth, respectively.
Vanderbilt currently ranks second overall in the Southland in team overall scoring average (20.187 per frame) and team overall fill percentage (85.29) while picking up a league-best 91.99 percent of single pin spares.
Individually, Bulanova leads an impressively deep squad for the Commodores, with herself, Poss and Quah ranking second through fourth in the league in individual overall scoring average on the season. As anchor, Bulanova posts a league-best 21.310 tenth-frame scoring average.
The Commodores next hit the lanes against most of their Southland foes at Arkansas State’s Mid-Winter Invitational on Jan. 13-15 in Jonesboro, Ark.
Honorable mentions for this month’s award included Michelle Ng (Tulane) and Kristin Quah (Vanderbilt).
Southland Bowlers of the Month are voted on by each school’s sports information directors. Voting for one’s own bowler is not permitted. To receive honorable mention, one must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
