Offensive Player of the Week: Jeremiah Briscoe, Sam Houston State – Sr. – Quarterback – Houston, Texas
The reigning Walter Payton Award winner picked up where he left off in 2016 with a stellar 2017 debut. Briscoe accounted for five touchdowns, including four passing, as the Bearkats picked up their first ever season-opening win over a ranked opponent with a 48-34 win over No. 7 Richmond. He connected with seven different receivers on 20 completions, throwing for 411 yards in what was his sixth game of 400 yards passing in his career. He also added his second career rushing touchdown, breaking free for a 41-yard score on the first play of the second quarter.
Honorable Mention: Eugene Bethea, Southeastern Louisiana; Damion Jeanpiere, Jr., Nicholls; Bobby Chan-Chan, Northwestern State.
Defensive Player of the Week: Josh Price, Sam Houston State – Sr. – Defensive Back – Missouri City, Texas
Price made a splash in his debut as part of Sam Houston State’s revamped secondary. The senior transfer safety picked off Richmond quarterback Kyle Lauletta in the red zone twice, including one with two minutes to play that all but clinched the game for the Bearkats. Price also picked up eight tackles, a mark that was second on the team for the game, in helping Sam Houston earn its first-ever win over a ranked opponent to open a season.
Honorable Mention: Terrell Encalade, Nicholls; Kyree McLean, McNeese.
Special Teams Player of the Week: Max Lyons, Southeastern Louisiana – Sr. – Defensive Back/Punt Returner – Los Angeles, Calif.
On the first punt return of his Southeastern career, Lyons returned a punt 60 yards for a touchdown Saturday at UL Lafayette. Later in the half, he recorded a 33-yard punt return inside the five-yard line to set up a Lion touchdown. His punt return touchdown was the first by a Lion since Tony McCrea ran one back in a 42-27 victory over Stephen F. Austin on Nov. 10, 2012.
Honorable Mention: Lorran Fonseca, Nicholls; Joe Zema, UIW.
Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots.
