FRISCO, Texas – Lamar’s Chastadie Barrs is the Southland Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the sixth time this season and second-straight week, the league announced Monday. All Southland weekly awards are presented by MidSouth Bank.

Barrs averaged a double-double last week -- 16 points and 12 rebounds per game -- in two convincing wins over Incarnate Word and Texas A&M Corpus Christi. The victories keep the Cardinals atop the league standings with a 14-1 mark in league play and 21-5 record overall.

Barrs played 38 minutes in Wednesday’s 79-53 home win over UIW, dropping 16 points to go along with seven rebounds and seven assists. The senior followed it up with another 16-point effort Saturday in 40 minutes on the floor, grabbing a career-high 17 rebounds in a 72-47 road win at Corpus Christi.
Prior to last Wednesday’s game, Barrs was named to the Naismith Defender of the Year Watch List.

While the senior has had a stellar two weeks, this week could be monumental: Thanks to 17 steals over her last two contests, she sits just eight away from setting the NCAA career steals record (624).
Barrs and the Cardinals are at Houston Baptist for a 7 p.m. CT tilt Wednesday before returning home Saturday for a 2 p.m. matinee against Stephen F. Austin. Lamar is riding a four-game winning streak and is a perfect 12-0 in Beaumont this season.
Honorable Mention: Cassidy Barrios, Nicholls; Dominique Golighty, Abilene Christian; Victoria Miller, Northwestern State

Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots.
